Skullcap Root

Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), a member of the mint family, is a potent medicinal herb that grows in the sandy fields of northeast China and Russia as well as the mountainous regions of southwest China. Known for its calming properties, skullcap has been used for centuries in the traditional medicine of many cultures.

In China, skullcap is a common ingredient in medicines used to treat a variety of ailments. Numerous Chinese studies have demonstrated skullcap’s effectiveness as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihistamine.

Passion Flower

Among the indigenous tribes of North, Central and South America, passion flower (passiflora incarnata) has a long history of use as a sedative and pain reliever. Passion flower is a common ingredient in European pharmaceuticals used to treat to treat nerve disorders, heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia, pain and high blood pressure, without the addictive side effects of most sedative drugs.

For example, in a 2001 study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, test subjects who were treated with passion flower showed a significant decrease in symptoms of anxiety without the impairment of performance commonly reported with the use of anti-anxiety drugs. And in a study of alcohol-addicted mice, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, passion flower extract reduced the anxiety of withdrawal by up to 90 percent.

Hops Strobile

Hops (humulus lupulus), most widely known as a bitter ingredient used in brewing beer, possesses numerous medicinal properties, which make this plant a favorite among alternative healthcare practitioners. With its mild sedative effect on the central nervous system, hops strobile is used to alleviate insomnia, stress and anxiety. Because it contains plant estrogens, hops has also been used in treating common menopausal complaints, such as insomnia and hot flashes.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is grown all over the world for use in the manufacturing of medicines, and cosmetics. Several studies have suggested that lemon balm used in combination with other calming herbs—such as valerian, hops, and chamomile, for example—may reduce anxiety and promote sleep. In one recent study, subjects who received higher doses of lemon balm experienced greater calmness and alertness than those who received lower doses or a placebo.
